Uluwatu, situated on the southern tip of Bali, Indonesia, is a haven for travelers seeking stunning ocean views, world-class surfing, and a vibrant cultural scene. Whether you’re a budget-conscious backpacker, a mid-range traveler looking for comfort and convenience, or a luxury-seeker in search of opulence and indulgence, Uluwatu offers a wide array of accommodation options to cater to every need and preference.
Uluwatu is our base when we go on our annual family trip to Bali, we just love the vibe this surfer town has. It also holds a special place in our hearts as its where we got married in 2023. So we venture back to Uluwatu Surf Villas yearly then also stay at Villa in Bingin.
In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the best places to stay in Uluwatu, ranging from budget-friendly surf inns to luxurious cliffside resorts. Additionally, we’ll provide a detailed breakdown of the different neighbourhoods within Uluwatu, each offering its own unique charm and attractions. Here is our guide for the best accommodation in Uluwatu.
In a Rush? Here Are Our Favourite Villas in Uluwatu
If you’re short on time, our favourite area to stay in Uluwatu is around Padang Padang, Bingin, and Suluban Beach. This stretch of coastline is the heart of Uluwatu, offering easy access to some of Baliโs most beautiful beaches, incredible cliffside views, world-class surf breaks, and a fantastic mix of cafes, restaurants, and beach clubs.
After more than 30 trips to Bali, these are our top villa picks in Uluwatu:
- Uluwatu Surf Villas โ Our overall favourite. The iconic clifftop location, breathtaking ocean views, and unbeatable sunsets make this one of the most memorable places to stay in Bali.
- Los Cabos Villa โ The best villa in Uluwatu for location. Tucked away in a quiet pocket between Padang Padang and Thomas Beach, you can walk to some of Uluwatuโs best cafes, restaurants, and beaches.
- Family Nest Villas โ Our top pick for families. Spacious villas, kid-friendly facilities, and access to Pangolin Kids Club make this an easy choice when travelling with little ones.
- Nisi Villa โ Perfect for groups of friends or larger families. With multiple bedrooms, generous living spaces, and a private pool, it’s ideal for those travelling together who still want plenty of room to relax.
No matter which villa you choose, staying in this part of Uluwatu puts you close to the best beaches, surf spots, cafes, and sunsets that make this corner of Bali so special.
Uluwatu Neighborhood Breakdown | Where to stay in Uluwatu
Quick answer: If this is your first trip and cafe/restaurant access matters most, stay in Bingin or Padang Padang โ everything is walkable.
If you want quiet and don’t mind a 20 minute drive for dinner, Balangan is gorgeous but isolated.
Ungasan and Nyang Nyang are resort-and-beach-club territory โ beautiful, but plan to drive everywhere. Put it this way we have been coming to Uluwatu for years and every time we either stay in Bingin or Padang Padang and still feel like we have only just scratched the surface.
Bingin |ย is our base of choice and where we’d point most first-timers, especially families. It’s the most central hub on the Bukit Peninsula โ Cashew Tree, Lucky Fish, Nourish and Single Fin are all walkable or a quick buggy ride apart, and it’s where Family Nest and Nisi Villa (both reviewed below) sit. It’s busier and pricier than it was a few years ago, but the trade-off is convenience: you can walk to breakfast, the beach, and sunset drinks without touching a Gojek app.
Good to know: Bingin Beach itself has seen recent redevelopment as local warungs have been relocated โ the area is changing fast, so book accommodation, not just the beach view, as your main draw.
Padang Padang | The main strip of Uluwatu and the most popular base if you don’t have your own transport. Restaurants like Kynd and Suka line the road, and Padang Padang Beach itself is a short walk from most stays here. Busier and more backpacker-heavy than Bingin, but unbeatable if walkability is your top priority. Los Cabos Villa, where we stayed in 2024, is in the perfect location. Walk distance to Kynd and Thomas Beach, plus not directly on the main road, so still nice and quiet.
Suluban (Uluwatu Beach) | Home to the legendary Ulu’s surf break and Single Fin, this is the spot for sunset drinks and a livelier, slightly more party-oriented crowd. Close to Uluwatu Temple. Good food and bar scene along the cliffside warungs, but less family-oriented than Bingin or Padang Padang.
Balangan | is genuinely beautiful โ quiet, less developed, with one of the best beaches on the peninsula and a golf course nearby. But it’s a real detour off the main road. If your plan is built around eating and drinking at the Bingin/Padang Padang cafe strip, Balangan adds 10-15 minutes each way, every time, by car or scooter. It’s a wonderful choice if peace and seclusion matter more to you than walkability โ just go in knowing that’s the trade-off, not as a surprise on day one. And personally, I wouldn’t stay here on my first (or even 2nd) visit to Uluwatu.
Ungasan | Home to some of the best Uluwatu beach clubs (Sundays, Karma, Savaya) and some of the island’s most luxurious cliffside resorts, plus Melasti and Green Bowl Beach. Further from the main hub, so you’re committing to drives for most meals outside your resort. Best suited to honeymooners and those happy to base themselves at the resort for the majority of the trip.
Nyang Nyang | The quietest, most remote corner of the peninsula, close to Uluwatu Temple. Good value for longer stays, but you’ll be driving to Suluban or Padang Padang for most dinners out. Not our first recommendation for a first Uluwatu trip, but worth knowing about for budget-conscious long stays. Plus it has one of the best beaches in Uluwatu!

Best Family Villas Uluwatu:
Family Nest Villas
We stayed in one of the 3-bedroom villas at Family Nest on our most recent Bali trip, and it’s now one of our top picks for travelling with young kids. The villa itself was stunning โ the master and second bedroom both overlook the pool, all three bedrooms have their own large bathrooms (two with gorgeous outdoor showers), and there’s a sunken lounge and full kitchen with a proper dining table. The small touches stood out most: kids’ bibs, plates and cutlery already stocked in the kitchen, complimentary high chairs and cots, and a dedicated kids’ room for Kylo โ complete with stuffed toys, a drawing station, a wooden train table and books. He didn’t want to leave it.
The real standout, though, is Pangolin, Family Nest’s on-site kids’ club. It’s two or three storeys of ball pits, climbing walls, slides, magnetic building blocks, play kitchens and reading nooks โ plus an outdoor area with a playground, trampolines and basketball hoop. We spent hours there across our stay, and Kylo made a friend who he kept asking to see for the rest of the trip. There’s also a treehouse and a separate playground with a sandpit dotted around the grounds, an on-site washing machine (a genuine lifesaver travelling with a baby), and an in-villa restaurant, Ant’s Pants, where breakfast (the avocado toast, beef sausages and hazelnut oat lattes were all favourites) saved us from having to leave the property most mornings.
Location-wise, Family Nest sits in the Bingin/Pecatu area, walking distance to Bulvana Pilates and a short drive to Gooseberry, Milk & Madu, and El Cabron for sunset drinks.

Nisi Villa
Just five to ten minutes from Family Nest, also in Bingin, Nisi Villa was another highlight โ we stayed in their 3-bedroom villa with the biggest pool on the property. The interiors lean heavily into natural wood, linen and texture, and the styling throughout felt genuinely considered rather than just “nice villa decor.” Each bedroom has its own bathroom and a big bed and desk, and the living area has a sunken lounge, big TV and full dining table.
What set Nisi apart for us: a fully stocked minibar with snacks, soft drinks and alcohol included โ something you’d expect at a hotel, not a villa โ plus welcome drinks and cold towels on arrival. They also run a complimentary buggy service to anywhere nearby, which we used constantly with the kids instead of relying on Gojek (no car seats, but the buggy was quick and Kylo loved it). For total relaxation, there’s also a private recovery space on-site with a steam room, cold plunge and hot plunge โ we spent a few hours there and it never felt crowded or shared.
Nisi is genuinely walkable to a lot of what makes Bingin great: Lucky Fish (great for fresh seafood, picked yourself), Cashew Tree, Nourish, Single Fin for sunset drinks, and Hatch. Service is run through WhatsApp, so anything from extra ice to organising the buggy is one message away.

Los Cabos Villa
One of our favourite family-friendly villas in Uluwatu is Los Cabos Villa, and itโs a place weโd happily return to again and again in fact we will stay there again this year! Tucked away just off the main road between Padang Padang and Thomas Beach, this villa offers the perfect balance of location and privacy. Itโs close enough to walk to cafes and beaches, yet far enough away that youโre not dealing with road noise or crowds, which is a big win in Uluwatu especially if travelling to Bali with a baby.
The villa itself is spacious, modern and incredibly clean. With multiple bedrooms, a private pool, full kitchen and open living spaces, it feels like a proper home base rather than just a place to sleep. We love how easy it is to do slow mornings here โ coffee by the pool, kids playing in the pool, and then heading out to explore nearby beaches or cafes. If youโre travelling with kids (or just want space and comfort), Los Cabos Villa is an excellent choice.5

FAQ: Where to Stay in Uluwatu
What’s the best area to stay in Uluwatu for first-timers?
Bingin or Padang Padang. Both put you within walking distance of the best cafes, restaurants and beaches, so you’re not relying on long drives for everyday meals. If this is your first trip and you haven’t mapped out exactly where you want to eat, these two areas are the safest bet.
Is Balangan a good place to stay in Uluwatu?
Balangan is beautiful and quieter than Bingin or Padang Padang, with one of the best beaches on the peninsula. But it’s a genuine 10-15 minute drive from the main cafe and restaurant strip. It’s a great choice if peace and seclusion matter more to you than walkability โ just don’t book it assuming you’ll be able to easily pop down the road for dinner.
Do I need a scooter or car if I stay in Uluwatu?
It depends on the area. Stay in Bingin or Padang Padang and you can walk to most things. Stay in Balangan, Ungasan or Nyang Nyang and you’ll need your own transport (or budget for Gojek/taxis) for most meals out.
Where should families stay in Uluwatu?
Bingin and Pecatu are our top picks for families โ this is where properties like Family Nest and Nisi Villa are, both with kids’ clubs, buggy services and easy access to family-friendly cafes like Cashew Tree and Nourish.
Where should couples or honeymooners stay in Uluwatu?
Suluban for sunset bars and surf culture, or Ungasan for cliffside luxury resorts and private beach clubs if budget allows.
How many days do you need in Uluwatu?
We’d recommend at least 4-5 nights to properly settle in and explore beyond your immediate area, especially if you’re staying somewhere walkable and want to experience a couple of different beach/cafe pockets via day trips.
Is Uluwatu good for surfers?
Yes โ Suluban (home of the legendary Ulu’s break), Bingin and Padang Padang are the main surf hubs, each with a different wave and crowd.
What’s the difference between Bingin and Padang Padang?
Bingin is slightly more boutique and residential with a strong cafe scene; Padang Padang is busier and more backpacker-heavy, sitting right on the main road. Both are walkable to the beach and good food.
