Kuta

Kuta used to be one of the most popular places to stay in Bali, particularly for first-time visitors. Years ago it was the centre of tourism on the island, known for its long sandy beach, beginner surf breaks and lively atmosphere.

When I first started visiting Bali more than 25 years ago, Kuta was actually one of the areas we stayed in. At the time it was one of the main hubs for accommodation and nightlife, and many travellers based themselves there before exploring other parts of the island.

Personally, we don’t stay in Kuta anymore and haven’t for the past 15 years. While it can still be convenient because of its proximity to the airport, the area has become much busier and more built up over time.

That said, we still visit Kuta regularly when we’re in Bali for Waterbom Bali, which is widely considered one of the best waterparks in the world and one of the best things to do in Bali with kids. Our son absolutely loves it, and it’s always a highlight of our trips.

Kuta is also home to a few long-running family resorts that are very popular with travellers who want everything in one place — large swimming pools, waterslides, kids clubs and entertainment.

So while it’s not our personal favourite area to stay anymore, there are still a couple of resorts here that are well known for being very family friendly.
