I’ve always felt that New South Wales doesn’t get nearly enough credit for just how stunning and romantic it is. The Whitsundays, Daintree Rainforest and Great Ocean Road are on every Austraian Bucket List – but living in NSW for all our life has meant we are constantly able to explore and create some of the most memorable experiences.
Matt and I have spent quite a bit of time exploring the best romantic getaways in NSW especially when he used to work in the USA. Every time he would come home we would choose a new location for a romantic getaway so we could reconnect. From cozy cabins tucked away in the blue mountains to vineyards of hunter valley, quiet beaches with epic views and charming coastal towns perfect for slow mornings and lazy afternoons — we fell in love with every corner we visited. Some of our most treasured memories were made on these little romantic getaways.
This guide is all about helping you plan the perfect couples’ escape in NSW. Whether you’re after slow mornings with coffee and mountain views, barefoot walks along pristine beaches, or long, indulgent lunches in wine country, I’ve got you covered.
I’ve included options from across the state. In just a few hours, you can swap the city skyline for rolling vineyards in the Hunter Valley, pristine beaches on the South Coast, or secluded cabins nestled deep in the Blue Mountains. For each of these destinations, I’ve recommended a unique stay or boutique hotel we genuinely love ourselves, or it’s on our wish list! These places offer the perfect blend of adventure, culinary and intimacy – ideal for couples who want to reconnect.
Leave the city behind and treat yourself and your loved one to one of these blissful breaks that come dripping in romance. Here are our favourite spots for a romantic couples getaway in NSW.
Planning your next romantic getaway from Sydney? Below, we’ve rounded up the best destinations to add to your list. 1. Central Coast – Coastal town with Spas, Fine Dining and National Parks
Located 1.5 hours north of Sydney is my beautiful hometown the Central Coast! The most popular spot with tourists is Terrigal Beach, which is due to its central location, great selection of cafes and restaurants and beautiful beaches and bays. Although this spot is amazing there is so much more to explore!
The Central Coast has lots of national parks and nature reserves. My favourite hikes are the Bouddi coastal walk and the Crackneck Coastal Walk – my husband and I do these hikes often. We love them as they both have a beautiful mix of beaches, views and bush. Can also explore Brisbane Water National park with a picnic at Somersby falls.
There’s something for the adventure as well, Glenworth Valley, offers horse-riding in an enchanting forest – how romantic. Other adventure activities include kayaking, abseiling, quad biking and laser tag.
For me though, the Central Coast is about all of its wonderful beaches, hit the waves and refuel are one of the many amazing cafes, and end the day at a fine dining restaurant.

Stay
- Mid-Range | Crown Plaza
- Air Bnb | Beach Front Stay
- Luxury | Bells at Killcare
- Best Beaches on the Central Coast
- Bouddi National Park Coastal Walk

2. Hunter Valley – Vineyards and Romantic Countryside Vibe
Wine, food, and wide-open spaces – Hunter Valley really does have it all. Matt and I love escaping here whenever we need a kid-free romantic weekend away. It’s only a 1-hour drive from the Central Coast, and the views on most of the journey wind through the rolling vineyards, feeling like you’ve stepped into a completely different world.
We’ve stayed in everything from luxurious suites with stunning vineyard views to tucked-away cabins where it feels like the whole valley is yours. There’s something about wandering through rows of vines hand-in-hand that just makes time slow down. The region is packed with wineries, from internationally renowned estates to small, family-run cellar doors where the owners are more than happy to pour a taste and share their stories. Some of our favourites include Bimbadgen Estate, Scarborough Wine Co and Audrey Wilkinson.
For a really special treat, we can’t recommend enough taking a hot air balloon ride over the valley at sunrise, with a champagne breakfast waiting at landing. Watching the sun light up the vines from above is pure magic – it’s one of those experiences that feels like it’s straight out of a movie. Hunter Valley isn’t just a getaway; it’s a chance to hit pause and soak up a little romance and luxury.

Stay
- Eco Stay | Somewhere Unique
- Air Bnb | Vineyard Cottage
- Luxury | Château Élan Hunter Valley or Spicers Guesthouse
- Muse Dining– Best Fine Dining
- Emerson’s Café & Restaurant– Best Breakfast
- Enzo– Best lunch with even better atmosphere
With over 150 vineyards in the Hunter Valley, it can be overwhelming to decide which wineries to visit! For wine tasting with a view – it’s hard to go past Audrey Wilkinson. Bimbadgen is also a favourite of ours and is also home to some killer concerts on the expansive lawns. The tasting rooms are also spacious, with all the estate wines hitting the spot every time! No Hunter trip is complete without visiting Tyrrells, this family-owned winery dates back to 1858!
One of the most incredible experiences you can do in the Hunter Valley is a hot air balloon flight. There’s nothing quite like watching the sunrise from 5000 feet in the air while you float above the vineyards. You’ll experience the Hunter Valley in a completely different way seeing the region from a birds-eye view but not without some effort.

Secluded Romantic Getaway in Hunter Valley
If you want some more privacy, we love our secluded stay at Wild Edge retreat. They offer adult only cabins in a secluded mountain top retreat. Wake up to the tranquillity and stillness and soak in your private hot tub as you take in the stunning view across the mountaintop. Cool off in the sparkling swimming pool or try your hand at tennis or treat yourself to a relaxing spa treatment.

3. Blue Mountains – Cozy Fires and Bush Walks
One of our absolute favourite romantic getaways in NSW has to be the Blue Mountains. After a few busy days in Sydney, we love escaping to this peaceful region to slow down and soak in the scenery. In 2000, the Blue Mountains were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it’s easy to see why, the sweeping cliffs, eucalyptus forests, and misty valleys create a truly magical backdrop for a couples’ escape.
Getting to the Blue Mountains is easy. You can jump on a train from Central Station, which takes about two hours to reach Katoomba, or self-drive so you can stop at scenic lookouts along the way. Having a car also gives you the freedom to explore hidden gems that most tours don’t reach.
Once you’re in Katoomba, the Blue Mountains Explorer Bus is a handy option if you don’t have a car. The hop-on, hop-off service takes you to all the main attractions and makes exploring stress-free. For a personal favourite, we drove to Echo Point Lookout to see the iconic Three Sisters framed by the endless mountain ranges — the views here never get old. From Echo Point, there are a few short hikes that lead to quieter lookouts, perfect for a romantic stroll with stunning scenery all around.

4. Nelson Bay – Romantic Getaway NSW by the Beach
Located just 3 hours north of Sydney, Nelson Bay is the hub of Port Stephens. It is known for its beautiful beaches and perfectly sheltered bays. An idyllic beach getaway, my partner and I, with our puppy, choose the small beach of Fingal Bay(just a few minutes from Nelson Bay) to celebrate our 6 year anniversary.
With its buzzing marina, just minutes away from the local set of shops, Nelson Bay has everything you can want in a mini getaway. Unwind from the chaos of the city with nature walks, local wineries, and beachside cafes. Nelson Bay and its surroundings are perfect for couples, families, and nature lovers. Explore the endless coast, take a walk up Tomaree Mountain, go Dolphin watching, or hit the famous Worimi sand dunes for some thrill-seeking adrenaline.

- Luxury | Anchorage Port Stephens or Anchorage Port Stephens
There is so much to do in the region of Port Stephens! Take your pick of over 26 coastal bays or go on a whale-watching cruise at sundown! The highlight and something I would definitely recommend is the Mt. Tomaree summit. The walk starts at Shoal Bay, with a 2.2km hike up to the top of Mt. Tomaree. At the summit you will be rewarded with 360-degree panoramic coastal views, overlooking both Shoal Bay and beyond.

Grab some wine and your favourite nibbles and set up camp at one of the stunning secluded bays.10 minutes from the center of Nelson Bay you will find the amazing Worimi Conservation Lands. The sand dunes stretch for more than 30km to the northern outskirts of Newcastle, covering an area of 4,200 hectares. Explore the ever-shifting golden dunes by 4WD, quad bike, or perhaps a camel ride into the ocean!

5. Jervis Bay – Romantic Getaway Glamping
Jervis Bay is hands-down one of the most breathtaking romantic getaways from Sydney. The powdery white sand beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters make it feel like your own slice of paradise. Matt and I love taking long walks along Hyams Beach, spotting dolphins playing just off the shore, or even going whale watching when we’re lucky. For couples who enjoy a mix of adventure and relaxation, there’s kayaking, snorkelling, diving, and of course, exploring the stunning Booderee National Park.
For a truly secluded getaway in NSW, we’ve stayed in waterfront cottages and eco-friendly cabins where you can drift off to sleep to the sound of the ocean – it’s such a peaceful experience. One of our absolute favourite stays has to be Paperbark Camp. At first glance, it looks like glamping, but the luxury inside feels more like a boutique bush cabin. Kangaroos hop by in the morning, birds sing outside your window, and the real showstopper is the outdoor bath. Sitting there surrounded by eucalyptus trees, listening to nature, and watching the sunrise – it’s honestly unbeatable.
Top Tip: Time your visit for sunrise or sunset at Huskisson for one of the most unforgettable romantic moments in Jervis Bay.
6. Byron Bay – A Hinterland Romantic Getaway That Has It All
Byron Bay, the most eastern point of Australia’s mainland, is a cozy beach town in New South Wales. It’s known for its laid-back culture, great surf conditions, scenic coast and amazing beaches. If you’re looking for somewhere special to enjoy an unforgettable romantic getaway, you can’t beat Byron Bay.
Although you can roadtrip here from Sydney, if you only have the weekend I would reccomendedc grabbing some cheap jetstar flights during friday freenzy and saving your self the 16 hour return drive. This will give opitmal time to romance each other in this laid back surfer town.
From its breathtaking beaches, pristine waters and lush hinterland, to the fine-dining restaurants, quirky art galleries and stylish boutiques, Byron Bay is the perfect place for love and romance. There are lots of things to do in Byron Bay, the most popular is the coastal track that takes visitors up to the Byron Bay Lighthouse. It sits perched on Cape Byron with views to either side of the cliffs. One on side is expansive Tallow Beach, on the other is the sleepy town center of Byron Bay.
Byron Bay is full of delicious cooking, roasted coffee and fresh seafood. People come here to get away from hectic, urban life, to center themselves through yoga classes, and connect with others through nightly drum circles on the beach!

8. Kangaroo Valley
Kangaroo Valley is one of those places that feels like you’ve truly escaped, even though it’s still close enough to Sydney to be an easy weekend away. The first time we visited, it instantly slowed us down — winding roads, rolling green hills as far as you can see, and that quiet country feeling where time doesn’t seem to matter. It’s tucked between the Southern Highlands and the South Coast, which makes it feel secluded and a little bit secret, perfect for couples craving a slower pace.
We loved spending our days wandering through the village, stopping into little cafes, browsing local markets, and getting out on the Kangaroo River for a peaceful kayak. Evenings are made for long, unhurried dinners — the kind where you linger over wine by candlelight and don’t rush anywhere afterwards.
When it comes to where to stay, this is the kind of place that does romantic accommodation in NSW really well. Check out the stunning Barranca Villa.
