Every now and then, a hotel comes along that doesn’t just meet your expectations – it completely redefines them. The kind of place where you pause mid-stay and think, this might just be the highlight of our entire trip. Last year, that place for us was Uluwatu Surf Villas, the year before Merusaka in Nusa dua and in 2022, The Anam in Vietnam, an award-winning luxury resort that still holds a special place in our hearts. And although we’re only halfway through the year, Wapa di Ume Sidemen has already claimed the title for 2025.
Tucked deep in Bali’s serene Sidemen Valley – a region often described as the island’s last untouched paradise – Wapa di Ume is not just a hotel, it’s an experience. Imagine waking up to mist drifting over endless rice terraces, hearing the distant chime of temple bells, and watching the first rays of sunlight kiss Mount Agung’s peak. This is the Bali you dream about but rarely find, and it’s exactly what Wapa di Ume delivers in spades.
For families like ours, it offered the perfect balance: peaceful enough for us to truly unwind, yet full of little adventures to keep the kids happily entertained. From our private villa’s plunge pool to the slow-paced beauty of Sidemen’s walking trails, every detail felt designed to help us slow down and reconnect – with nature, with culture, and most importantly each other.
In this Wapa di Ume Sidemen review, I’ll take you through everything that makes this property, in my opinion, the best hotel in Sidemen. Whether you’re here for a romantic getaway, a wellness retreat, or a family escape, I’m confident you’ll fall under its spell just as we did.

Location of Wapa di Ume Sidemen

Strategically nestled amidst terraced rice fields, ancient temples, and small, vibrant villages, Wapa di Ume Sidemen offers a truly immersive experience in Bali’s cultural heartland. Located in the Sidemen Valley – often called the “Tuscany of Bali” – the resort is roughly 45 minutes’ drive from the buzz of Ubud, and just over an hour from Bali’s international airport. Yet, despite its accessibility, it feels wonderfully secluded.
We had our driver, Made, pick us up from Seseh (just north of Canggu). He has a car seat for Zadi, which is essential when travelling to Bali with a baby – highly recommend. With one toilet stop, we managed to arrive within 2 hours. There was a bif traffic at the beginning of the trip, but the rest was easy.
What makes the location of Wapa di Ume so extraordinary is how it captures both serenity and connectedness. On one side, the sparkling Telaga Waja River winds through the valley, offering scenic spots for river trekking and rafting. On the other, numerous temples and traditional weaving villages surround the property, offering enriching cultural experiences without long journeys.
Each afternoon, we wandered through emerald-green paddies, glimpsed rice farmers at work, visited a local temple tucked into a hillside, and discovered a roadside stall selling homemade snacks. Whether you’re here for peace, culture, or family-friendly adventure, the location alone earns this place a solid claim as the best hotel in Sidemen.
When planning your Bali itinerary and where to stay there are plenty of options, but I have to say, the Bukit Peninsula (Uluwatu, Nusa Dua & Jimbaran) is definitely one of my new favourites! They have the best beaches in Bali and are a little less crowded then Seminyak or Canggu.

Why Our Family Loved Wapa di Ume Sidemen
Wapa di Ume Sidemen ticked so many boxes for us as a family – from breathtaking scenery to thoughtful details that made travelling with our 5 month old baby and 4 yr old a joy. Here’s what stood out the most:
Unreal scenery – Every corner of the property looks out onto emerald rice terraces, tropical gardens, or Mount Agung’s dramatic peak. Sunrise here is pure magic. We couldn’t stop taking photos of the magical scenery. Even Kylo, by the end of the trip kept saying wow what a wonderful view.
Peaceful location – Far from Bali’s tourist hustle, yet close enough to enjoy day trips to Ubud or the coast. Sidemen is the Bali you dream of – calm, green, and culturally rich. Our new favourite spot on the island.
Warm Balinese hospitality – The staff genuinely went above and beyond, remembering our names, offering local tips, and making the kids feel like VIPs. The hospitality was like no other.
Family-friendly villas – Spacious layouts, private plunge pools, and thoughtful amenities made it easy to relax while keeping the kids entertained. There was even a little playground with a trampoline and slide, which Kylo loved.
Incredible food at Sleeping Gajah Restaurant – From fresh salads to authentic Balinese dishes, every meal was beautifully prepared and full of local flavour. There’s also loads of vegan and vego options, which Matty appreciated.
Cultural experiences on-site – One of the best things about Wapa di Ume is the on-site cultural experiences like the cooking class, weaving demonstration, rice terrace hikes and temple blessing. They even have a complimentary daily walk through the rice paddies- such a lovely way to start our day!
Wellness focus – Open-air yoga pavilion, gym, soothing spa treatments( with the most amazing view), and plenty of quiet corners for a bit of “me time.”
Sustainability in action – Organic gardens, local sourcing, and eco-friendly practices that feel authentic rather than performative.
Perfect for all traveller types – Whether you’re a couple seeking romance, a solo traveller craving peace, or a family wanting connection time, Wapa di Ume delivers in spades.

First Impression of Wapa di Ume Sidemen
Pulling into the winding driveway, framed by flaming bougainvillea and tall frangipani trees, we immediately sensed we’d entered a sanctuary. The architecture is subtle yet elegant: traditional Balinese alang-alang roofs peek above bamboo shade gardens; stone pathways echo with wild ginger blooms; and the reception pavilion feels like a revered family estate.
The check-in process was seamless and personal. We were offered refreshing herbal-infused welcome drinks, and the staff took the time to learn our names, our children’s interests, and even dietary preferences. Nana, our guide to all things Sidemen, greeted us with a warmth that felt more like reconnecting with an old friend than meeting someone new.

From the first handshake to the moment we stepped into our villa, the presentation and attention to detail were exceptional. A chilled towel, a fragrant flower in my child’s hair, and a beautifully crafted key – these touches aren’t just nice-to-haves; they set the tone for a stay defined by mindfulness and genuine hospitality.
When our room was ready we jumped on the back of a buggy. Matt laughed and said ‘you know you’re in for a great stay when your experience starts with a buggy ride to your room.’ He was not mistaken!
Rooms at Wapa di Ume
Wapa di Ume offers a beautiful selection of accommodations, suited to couples, families, and solo travelers alike. Here’s a breakdown of what we experienced:
1. Lanai Room
Perfect for couples or solo retreats, these suites offer private porches that open directly onto the resort’s lush gardens. High alang-alang thatched ceilings and open-air bathrooms make you feel connected to nature, while plush bedding ensures restful nights.
2. Di Ume Suite
These are similar in layout, but open onto a terrace with direct views over the terraced rice fields. Ours included a plunge pool perched at the edge – an ideal spot for evening relaxation.

3. One Bedroom Pool Villa
We stayed in a family villa – which stood out for its spaciousness and thoughtful configuration. The day bed, private plunge pool, huge bathroom, and tasteful décor blend local weaving patterns and natural materials. We appreciated the twin vanities, large shower with rainfall head, and the tranquil outside seating with the most spectacular view.
Every room we glimpsed adhered to the same style: hand-carved furniture, soft Balinese textiles, open-air elements, and immaculate service behind the scenes. It’s clear that each detail was thoughtfully curated to ensure comfort, privacy, and a connection to the environment – an undeniable hallmark of the best hotel in Sidemen.

4. Lux Tents
One of Wapa di Ume’s most unique offerings is the new luxury tents combininging safari-style adventure with five-star amenities. Think hardwood floors, king-sized beds, freestanding bathtubs, and views straight out to the valley – all while still enjoying the comforts of air conditioning, high-speed Wi-Fi, and room service. They have options with or without pool and also a family-sized tent. Staying here feels like camping, but with none of the “roughing it.”
Dining at Wapa di Ume – Sleeping Gajah
The on-site restaurant, Sleeping Gajah, is a dream for food lovers and families alike. An open-air space overlooking the panoramic view over the hill and the natural sounds of the Unda river.
Breakfast
Each morning we woke to a lovely à la carte menu featuring both Western and Balinese staples. Our kids adored the fluffy banana pancakes and homemade coconut yoghurt smoothie bowls, while we savored traditional ayam burbur, made with local spices.
Lunch & Dinner
Dining in the evening was a delight. The chef specialises in fresh, locally sourced produce: imagine chilli crab with tomato concasse and spaghetti, grilled tender chicken with Balinese sambal, rendang sapi – Indonesia’s most famous braised beef curry and mangoo sticky rice. The highlights were the soto ayam and satay. Vegetarian and vegan options were thoughtfully prepared – jackfruit curry, gado gado, mixed vegetable yellow curry – and even the simplest dishes felt elevated by local produce and artisanal presentation.

Ambiance & Service
At Sleeping Gajah, the service felt like being invited to a friend’s garden feast. Candlelight flickered across a table of tropical hardwood; the scent of frangipani flirted with every breath; gentle live gamelan music drifted through the air. We relished the peaceful atmosphere and friendly staff who anticipated every need.
Dining here, surrounded by the Sidemen sunset, felt like dining in the heart of Bali itself – a reason why this property stands out as the best hotel in Sidemen.

Massage and spa treatments are offered in open-air salas – try the jasmine and coconut oil massage for ultimate bliss. There is also a huge on-site gym complete with weights and treadmills.
During my stay in Sidemen, I was treated to a full body massage followed by a beautiful floral bath at Kapha Spa — and it was every bit as magical as it sounds. Nestled in the heart of the valley, the spa blends serene tropical design with the calming sounds of nature, creating the perfect setting to truly unwind.
From the moment I stepped into the treatment room, with its sweeping views over the rice terraces, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The massage was both deeply relaxing and rejuvenating, while the floral bath afterwards allowed me to completely sink into the stillness of Sidemen. It was more than just a treatment – it felt like a journey back to myself, surrounded by the beauty and tranquillity of nature.

Cultural Activities
Participate in a Balinese cooking class, a weaving demonstration with a local artisan, and a temple blessing – all organised by the thoughtful staff. Kids can learn about traditional instruments and tools, while the adults appreciate the explanations behind local rituals.
